Can an AI chatbot remember past conversations?
Within one conversation
Most chatbots keep track of the current chat session. They use the recent messages as context to make replies feel coherent. This is called the context window, and it has a size limit, often thousands of words.
If the conversation gets too long, older messages may be dropped or summarized. Starting a new chat usually clears this short-term memory.
Across sessions
Some services offer a memory feature that stores facts about you, like your name or preferences, and uses them in future chats. You typically have to turn it on, and you can review or delete stored memories.
Other chatbots have no cross-session memory by default. Even with memory, it is not perfect: the bot may forget details or recall them incorrectly.
- Check settings for a "memory" or "personalization" option
- Look for a way to view and clear stored data
- Assume public chats may be reviewed by the company unless stated otherwise
Privacy considerations
If a chatbot remembers you, that data is stored on the company's servers. Read the privacy policy to see how long it is kept and who can access it.
For sensitive topics, consider using a temporary chat mode if available, or avoid sharing identifying details.
Common mistakes
- Assuming every chatbot remembers your past chats; many do not unless you enable memory.
- Thinking memory is flawless; it can mix up or forget details.
- Sharing private information in a chat without checking how long the service retains it.
